Two New Journal Articles Published in Oracle
After many rounds of revision, I am excited to have two more recent articles published about the sorority/fraternity experience. In these two articles, I am renewing my effort to publish about sororities and fraternities. These articles appear in Oracle: The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (Oracle).
I collaborated with Dr. Jaime Myers (Monmouth University) to explore the gendered ways in which sorority and fraternity members facilitate their own constructed harm reduction strategies. These informal strategies are referred to as a “protective behavior strategies” (PBS). Sorority women attempted to implement more collaborative PBS whereas fraternity men attempted to control outside guests. Fraternity men sought to not reduce self-harm as much as party continuity. This is a qualitative chapter drawn from different universities and chapters.
In the second article, I contributed to a collaborative effort to identify the ways in which the new member sorority/fraternity experience contributes to sense of belonging. I co-authored with Levi Harrell-Hallmark (Oklahoma City University) and Jason Castles (Maryville University). Although this is a single institutional qualitative case study, the participants described how their new member experience contributed to their sense of belonging to the university student community.
