Summer Speaking

This July I was asked to speak about a number of issues related to sorority/fraternity experiences as a part of my fellowship with the Piazza Center for Fraternity & Sorority Research and Reform.

This summer I had the opportunity to speak with the Lead@Duke staff in Student Leadership at Duke University about social class and leadership. I was asked to speak because I recently co-authored an article in New Directions for Student Leadership with my colleague Dr. Dan Bureau (Louisiana State University). We discussed the performativity of social class based on William Baratt’s Social Class Model as well as ways to make the hidden costs more transparent. I also served on a panel for the annual Institute for Hazing Prevention. I discussed early warning signs of hazing and some of my ongoing research. I appreciated the chance to further complicate and problematize issues of sorority/fraternity experiences to improve these spaces of student development.
